Dr. Rudy Lopes MBBS, FRANZCOG, DRANZCOG, CERT FAM PLAN Obstetrician & Gynaecologist OverviewI have commenced both private and public practice in general obstetrics & gynaecology, with a special interest in laparoscopic surgery. Early Training I graduated from Monash University in 1994 and was appointed an Intern at Monash Medical Centre (MMC) the next year. After a year as a general surgical resident at MMC, with rotations to Frankston Hospital, I completed a year of Diploma in Obstetrics in 1997. At the same time, I completed the Family Planning Victoria Certificate in Family Planning and Sexual Health. I have since done numerous additional training courses in family planning, including training in the insertion of Mirena, Implanon and Essure devices. Specialist Training I started training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the MMC where I spent my first four years of training, including a six month stint as a junior registrar at Dandenong Hospital. I then left for Queensland for my senior registrar years, where I was at Nambour Hospital for twelve months during 2002. Following that, I was appointed as a Senior Registrar in Gynaecology Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Brisbane where I started developing an interest in general gynaecological laparoscopic surgery. I then became a Senior Registrar at the Mater Mother's Hospital in Brisbane, where my time was divided between general obstetrics and gynaecology, and medical administration. I was able to attend and assist at the public laparoscopic list once a week. I also completed an accredited six months of training in medical administration, with my special areas of interest being clinical governance and clinical indicators. Overseas Experience I then left for the United Kingdom where I spent six months attached to a large district general hospital in Swindon. Although my clinical work was in general obstetrics & gynaecology, I was attached to the Minimally Invasive Surgery Unit and was able to further develop my laparoscopic skills. I am now back in Melbourne on a permanent basis where I intend to further refine and develop my skills in laparoscopic surgery, with a particular emphasis on laparoscopic hysterectomy and laparoscopic pelvic floor repair. Personal I am married to my wife Jenny. We have two sons, Edward and Denzel, both of which are a real joy to behold. Outside of obstetrics & gynaecology, I enjoy reading, listening to jazz music, and collecting and consuming wine.
